The Voltaire-Supermicro RapidStorage Appliance™ is a joint solution from Voltaire and Supermicro that delivers ultra-fast, infinitely scalable, and cost effective storage for high performance clusters. Supermicro high-density Double-Sided Storage™ servers enhanced by Voltaire Storage Accelerator™ (VSA™) software form the building blocks for massively scalable high performance storage systems that can deliver millions of I/O operation per second (IOPS) and hundreds of Gigabytes/second (GB/s) with 100X faster access time than traditional storage systems.
Using Voltaire’s high-speed 10GbE or InfiniBand switches, multiple appliances can be interconnected to form a highly scalable and unified system with dozens of high-speed links serving data to clients in parallel at rates that are several orders of magnitudes faster than most existing storage systems. The storage servers are available in three different configurations that are optimized for different types of workloads.
- High IOPS: Delivers 500K IOPS and maximum bandwidth of 6 GB/s
- High bandwidth: Delivers 8 GB/s maximum bandwidth and a disk capacity of 43.2 TB
- High capacity: Delivers a disk capacity of 72 TB and 5 GB/s maximum bandwidth
Applications, databases, hypervisors, or file system nodes (such as Lustre, GPFS, Ibrix, or pNFS) are connected to the storage servers over parallel paths, and the storage cluster is managed as one large, unified storage system.
Using this scale-out design, the RapidStorage Appliance leverages Voltaire’s VSA software, RDMA technologies, and Flash-based caching to achieve 100X faster storage access than traditional high-speed storage systems—at a fraction of the price.
